1. Larry Fitzgerald-Arizona Cardinals
Auction Value: $40
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 5
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 5
The stats speak for themselves, 96 receptions, 1431 yards, and 12 touchdowns a year after posting 100 receptions, 1409 yards, and 10 touchdowns. The Cardinals offense remains intact and Fitz only turns 26 in August. I do not believe that Fitzgerald is by far the best receiver in the draft as many people do but I do feel he is among the elite and cannot argue with him being the first receiver off the board.
(09’ Proj: 95 receptions, 1500 yards, 11 touchdowns) 216 Fantasy Points
2. Andre Johnson-Houston Texans
Auction Value: $38
Bye Week: 10
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 7
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 12
I could not argue with anybody taking Johnson as the number one receiver off the board, how can you argue with 115 receptions, 1575 yards, and 8 touchdowns. Those are the numbers he put up last season and while he has yet to put up more than eight touchdowns in his six-year career, you only need to go back to 2007 when he posted eight in only nine games to know he is capable. The sky is the limit, especially if Matt Schaub could find a way to stay healthy an entire season.
(09’ Proj: 105 receptions, 1520 yards, 10 touchdowns) 212 Fantasy Points
3. Randy Moss-New England Patriots
Auction Value: $36
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 1
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 17
Nobody missed Tom Brady more than Moss, posting 29 less receptions, 485 yards, and 12 less touchdowns than 2007. Luckily his 2007 numbers were out of this world so he still posted 1008 yards and 11 touchdowns on 69 receptions. He is now 32 but Tom Brady is back and while I cannot see another 23 touchdowns like he put up in 2007 it would not surprise me to see him put up 15+.
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1210 yards, 15 touchdowns) 211 Fantasy Points
4. Calvin Johnson-Detroit Lions
Auction Value: $36
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 16
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 25
Larry Fitzgerald had better enjoy his reign at number one because I have a feeling it will be short lived, and that is not a shot at Fitz but a compliment to Johnson’s ability. I would not be surprised if he tops this list for the next five years without blinking an eye. C.J. put up 1331 yards and 12 touchdowns last season on 78 receptions despite being the only show in town with subpar quarterback play, on a team that did not win a single game. If Matthew Stafford becomes the real deal I would not be surprised to see C.J. put up 2000 yards and 20+ touchdowns down the road, yes he is that good!
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1380 yards, 12 touchdowns) 210 Fantasy Points
5. Marques Colston-New Orleans Saints
Auction Value: $34
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 8
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 16
This may be a head scratcher to many people but we are calling our shot on this one, we predict 4600 passing yards and 32 touchdowns for Drew Brees and both of those could be on the low end by the way. Colston is Brees’s go-to-guy and while he will get other people involved, I expect Colston to put career marks in 2009.
(09’ Proj: 100 receptions, 1280 yards, 13 touchdowns) 206 Fantasy Points
6. Steve Smith-Carolina Panthers
Auction Value: $34
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking:
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 3
The Panthers are going to run, run, throw to Smith; it is a simple yet effective plan that keeps Smith at elite receiver level. He averaged 101.5 yards per game last season. Smith has only had double digits once in his career, 12 in 2005 but I look for defenses to key on the running game, especially in the red zone, allowing Smith a little more wiggle room this season.
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1350 yards, 10 touchdowns) 195 Fantasy Points
7. Greg Jennings-Green Bay Packers
Auction Value: $34
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 18
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 40
Jennings proved last season that 2007 was no fluke and it does not matter who is throwing him the ball he is going to put up big numbers. Jennings is only 25, is clearly the best receiver on the Packers roster, and Rodgers will look to him early and often in 2009. For the fourth consecutive season, he should improve his receptions and yardage totals.
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1300 yards, 10 touchdowns) 190 Fantasy Points
8. Antonio Bryant-Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Auction Value: $32
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: None
I will admit that I made the mistake of not buying into the Bryant hype last year but 83 receptions, 1248 yards, and seven touchdowns later, I believe. These numbers came from a guy that had minimal talent around him and was not even in the NFL in 2007. His problem has never been lack of talent but rather keeping his attitude in check. It appears as though he has his head on straight and while he is an easy guy to throw onto the bust pile I think he surprises again this season.
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1250 yards, 10 touchdowns) 185 Fantasy Points
9. Vincent Jackson-San Diego Chargers
Auction Value: $32
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 42
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 32
He has seen his receptions and yardage totals go up in each year of his career, he is only 26, he is 6’5” and he has earned the respect of Philip Rivers. The Chargers will continue to throw the ball this season, Jackson will surprise many people, and he offers a great value as he can be had a lot lower than many players who will not be as productive this season.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 1250 yards, 9 touchdowns) 179 Fantasy Points
10. Roddy White-Atlanta Falcons
Auction Value: $30
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 21
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 75
We received a lot of dissension for our love of Rowdy Roddy last season but our prediction of 90 yards, 1350 yards, and 9 touchdowns was right on the money as White put up 88 receptions for 1382 yards, and 7 touchdowns. The Falcons will again have a run first mentality and they have added Tony Gonzalez but the continuing progression of Matt Ryan makes White a top 10 pick with room to grow.
(09’ Proj: 88 receptions, 1300 yards, 8 touchdowns) 178 Fantasy Points
11. Dwayne Bowe-Kansas City Chiefs
Auction Value: $30
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 20
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 66
There are a number of people predicting a breakout season from Bowe, thanks in part to the addition of Matt Cassell at quarterback and while I expect big things from him, I am a little leery. Cassell is still an unproven commodity and I do not think the loss of Tony Gonzalez can be underestimated. Unless the running game is clicking along, Mark Bradley, and Bobby Engram step up there is a good chance Bowe will be facing double teams all season. I love the kids talent and I still expect big things I am just saying I can see a scenario where his numbers are much lower than predicted numbers below.
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1200 yards, 9 touchdowns) 174 Fantasy Points
12. Reggie Wayne-Indianapolis Colts
Auction Value: $30
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 2
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 6
Wayne no longer has Marvin Harrison to take some pressure off him but he still has Dallas Clark, Anthony Gonzalez, and what should be an improved running game. He will turn 31 in November but Peyton Manning’s go-to-guy is still as consistent as they come.
(09’ Proj: 90 receptions, 1200 yards, 9 touchdowns) 174 Fantasy Points
13. Brandon Marshall-Denver Broncos
Auction Value: $38
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 9
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 61
For the second straight season, Marshall had 100+ receptions to go along with his 1265 yards and 6 touchdowns. That is the good part, the bad part is, Jay Cutler is out Kyle Orton is in, there has been talk of a possible suspension thanks to more off-field issues, and finally Marshall does not want to be in Denver and has yet to report. At this point we can only assume that he will be in Denver when the season rolls around and that he will have his professional game face on like he has the past two seasons.
(09’ 90 receptions, 1260 yards, 8 touchdowns) 174 Fantasy Points
14. Anquan Boldin-Arizona Cardinals
Auction Value: $28
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 15
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 10
Boldin is big, fast, strong, and tough as Dick Butkus but he is not happy with his contract and there is the possibility it translates onto the field. I fully expect him to be on the field for Arizona this season and for him to put up typical Boldiness numbers. The main thing with Boldin is staying healthy, he has only played in a complete 16 game season twice in his seven years. Last season he posted 1038 yards and 11 touchdowns on 89 receptions in just 12 games, that translates to 117 receptions, 1384 yards, and 15 touchdowns for a 16 game season. Now I am not predicting numbers like that this season but this shows it is possible. On a side note, for those that say Boldin is a good receiver made great by the presence of Larry Fitzgerald they could be right, in the four career games Fitz has missed Boldin posted 4 receptions for 47 yards, 4 receptions for 59 yards, 12 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown, and 2 receptions for 25 yards.
(09’ Proj: 95 receptions, 1140 yards, 10 touchdowns) 174 Fantasy Points
15. Chad Ochocinco-Cincinnati Bengals
Auction Value: $28
Bye Week: 8
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 11
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 1
I wonder if Chad changed his middle name when he was changing his last name because if had an E then we could just call him C.E.O., never mind his ego has been stroked enough. Just two years ago, Ochocinco was our number one pre-season receiver, well Chad Johnson was but that is just apples to apples. For the first time since 2006 he missed a game (three) which could have had as much to do with his decline in his numbers as much as not having Carson Palmer hucking him the ball. There was no player more consistent from 2003-2007 never catching under 87 balls while never posting less than 1274 yards and 7 touchdowns. Those are close to the numbers I expect 85 to return to this season.
(09’ Proj: 88 receptions, 1260 yards, 7 touchdowns) 168 Fantasy Points
16. Roy Williams-Dallas Cowboys
Auction Value: $26
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 19
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 8
Thus far in his career Williams is more hype than substance, yes he did score eight touchdowns his first two seasons and seven in his third but he has only scored six touchdowns the past two seasons combined and has only had more than 838 yards receiving once, 1310 in 2006. His 19 receptions, 198 yards, and one touchdown in 10 games for the Cowboys last season is unacceptable but Terrell Owens is no longer in town and Williams will be expected to put up career numbers and while I feel he is a risky pick I am giving him the benefit of the doubt based on his talent level.
(09’ Proj: 75 receptions, 1100 yards, 8 touchdowns) 158 Fantasy Points
17. Wes Welker-New England Patriots
Auction Value: $26
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 14
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 57
Who needs Tom Brady? Obviously not Welker who had one less reception for 10 less yards last season than he did in 2007. He did score five less touchdowns however. Welker’s real value remains in PPR leagues but as long has he catching 110+ balls a year he is going to put up solid numbers.
(09’ Proj: 110 receptions, 1100 yards, 7 touchdowns) 152 Fantasy Points
18. Lee Evans-Buffalo Bills
Auction Value: $24
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 26
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 13
Evans came into the league and scored nine touchdowns on 48 receptions as a rookie, seven the next season on 48 receptions, and 8 in 2006 on 82 receptions. Since then he has only combined for eight touchdowns on 118 combined receptions. The presence of Terrell Owens will take pressure off Evans allowing him to do what he does best, go deep.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 1100 yards, 7 touchdowns) 152 Fantasy Points
19. Braylon Edwards-Cleveland Browns
Auction Value: 24
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 4
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 29
After posting 1289 yards and 16 touchdowns on 80 receptions in 2007 Edwards came crashing back to earth last season only compiling 873 sports and 3 touchdowns on 55 receptions. You can blame his decline in part to the fact that he was a ball-dropping machine, couple that with the quarterback situation and you have yourself arguably the biggest disappointment of last season. At this point, I do not know if any of the above will be fixed this season but his talent is just too great to drop any further. This is a high risk/high reward pick in my mind.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 1100 yards, 7 touchdowns) 152 Fantasy Points
20. Eddie Royal-Denver Broncos
Auction Value: $22
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
We did not have Royal in our pre-season rankings last season but we were not surprised that he had such a nice rookie season, OK we did not expect 91 receptions for 980 yards, and five touchdowns but we knew he had potential. Last season we wrote, “I love this Royal kid and he could have a surprisingly good rookie campaign with big upside.” I still love this Royal kid.
(09’ Proj: 85 receptions, 1100 yards, 7 touchdowns) 152 Fantasy Points
21. Steve Smith-New York Giants
Auction Value: $22
Bye Week: 10
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 61
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 85
I decided Smith has too much potential for me to call him “the other” Steve Smith anymore so from now on he will be referred to as Steve “the Giant” Smith. The Giant caught 57 balls last season for 574 yards while adding one touchdown despite being the third receiver behind Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer, neither are with the Giants anymore and Smith is the new leader of the pack. Domenik Hixon and rookie Hakeem Nicks, along with tight end Kevin Boss will battle for receptions and my money is on Smith. After this season the Giant may never be called “the other” Steve Smith again.
(09’ Proj: 80 receptions, 1000 yards, 7 touchdowns) 142 Fantasy Points
22. Santonio Holmes-Pittsburgh Steelers
Auction Value: $20
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 17
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 38
We were high on Holmes last season but if you take away his Super Bowl MVP performance there was not a whole lot there to warrant a seventeenth ranking. After three years he has yet to top 55 receptions which is the biggest thing holding him back at this point. I am expecting to see the Super Bowl Holmes more this season and this should be the season that Holmes overtakes Hines Ward as the Steelers best fantasy receiver.
(09’ Proj: 68 receptions, 990 yards, 7 touchdowns) 141 Fantasy Points
23. Lance Moore-New Orleans Saints
Auction Value: $20
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: None
It would be easy to say last season was a fluke and call for Moore to be a bust this season but I do not think it was. This was not just a guy filling in until Marques Colston came back from injury, this guy started with Colston and had even better numbers when the two were on the field at the same time. The Saints have a handful of young receivers but at this point there is no reason to think any of them are better than Moore.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 900 yards, 8 touchdowns) 138 Fantasy Points
24. T.J. Houshamandzadeh-Seattle Seahawks
Auction Value: $18
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 10
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 15
After a magical 2007 season Housh came crashing down to earth, OK 92 receptions for 904 yards is was not the main problem, it is the eight less touchdowns that killed fantasy owners. The move to Seattle should not hurt his production as the Bengals and Seahawks are like clones, both have a star quarterback, a subpar running game, and a roster full of questionable receivers. You know T.J. is happy not to have to play half of his games in cold weather anymore.
(09’ Proj: 80 receptions, 950 yards, 7 touchdowns) 137 Fantasy Points
25. Santana Moss-Washington Redskins
Auction Value: $16
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 33
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 23
You know what you get with Moss, he will not get you 90 receptions, 1500 yards, or 10+ touchdowns but you will get 800-100 yards and 6 touchdowns. The three times he has played in all 16 games, he has had 79, 84, and 74 receptions.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 1000 yards, 6 touchdowns) 136 Fantasy Points
26. Terrell Owens-Dallas Cowboys
Auction Value: $16
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 3
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 7
For the third straight season T.O. caught double-digit touchdowns and for the eighth time in his 13 year career. It was also his third straight 1000+ yard season and ninth of his career. That sounds all-good but he turns 36 in December, he drops more than his share of passes, playing in Buffalo in December does not bode well for receivers, and Trent Edwards is arguably the worst quarterback he has ever played with. I do not expect a complete fade but this could be the beginning of the end.
(09’ Proj: 65 receptions, 900 yards, 7 touchdowns) 132 Fantasy Points
27. Devin Hester-Chicago Bears
Auction Value: $14
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 68
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: None
This is only Hester’s third season trying his hand at receiver and only his second as a full-time starter so this ranking could be considered high but with his speed and the addition of Jay Cutler I like his chances to be the Bears top receiving threat this season and he could have better days ahead.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 950 yards, 6 touchdowns) 131 Fantasy Points
28. DeSean Jackson-Philadelphia Eagles
Auction Value: $12
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 74
Jackson gained 912 yards on 62 receptions as a rookie but only found the end zone twice. He did add one rushing touchdown on 17 carries and another 1 on a punt return. Jackson did a little bit of everything for the Eagles last season and will be asked to do the same this season. I do not expect a big increase this season but I do believe he has upside to put up bigger numbers.
(09’ Proj: 68 receptions, 1000 yards, 5 touchdowns) 130 Fantasy Points
29. Hines Ward-Pittsburgh Steelers
Auction Value: $10
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking:
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 18
You know what you get with Ward, he does not put up big receptions, no season with more than 81 in the past five years, he doesn’t put up big yards, last season’s 1043 were the most he posted since 2003, and he has only had three double digit touchdown seasons in 11 years. What you do get with Ward is consistency and production that is still better than most receivers are. He is 33 now but he is a very intelligent receiver that uses his mind as well as his ability.
(09’ Proj: 75 receptions, 850 yards, 7 touchdowns) 127 Fantasy Points
30. Laveranues Coles-Cincinnati Bengals
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 32
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 20
Coles turns 32 in December, is going to a new franchise, and does not put up big numbers but much like Hines Ward he is consistent. Take away 2007 and 2000, the only two seasons he has not played in all 16 games of his nine year career and he has never posted less than 59 receptions or more than 91, he has never gained less than 845 yards or more than 1264 yards, and has averaged five touchdowns for his career without every scoring more than seven in one single season. Playing with Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco gives him a chance to be an intriguing sleeper candidate.
(09’ Proj: 75 receptions, 900 yards, 6 touchdowns) 126 Fantasy Points
31. Jerricho Cotchery-New York Jets
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 27
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 35
I have to admit that I am not a Cotchery fan and he could very easily turn out to be a bust even ranked at this position. He could only muster 858 yards on 71 receptions last season with Brett Favre under center. Now he has Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens throwing him the ball and he no longer has Laveranues Coles to take the heat off him. I could be off the mark but I think anything more than predicted below would be a major surprise.
(09’ Proj: 78 receptions, 960 yards, 5 touchdowns) 126 Fantasy Points
32. Bernard Berrian-Minnesota Vikings
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 43
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 30
Berrian only had 48 receptions last season yet put up 7 touchdowns and 964 yards, an amazing 20.1 yards per receptions average. Imagine what he could do if he had a quarterback? We may get the chance this season with talk of Brett Favre joining the Vikings. Even if Sage Rosenfels is under center, it is an upgrade for Berrian. He has yet to catch more than 71 balls in any season or compile more than 964 yards but he has scored 21 total touchdowns over the past three seasons (18 receiving, one rushing, one punt return). Could this finally be the season Berrian breaks out? I am not counting on it but if Favre is under center, I like his chances.
(09’ Proj: 58 receptions, 900 yards, 6 touchdowns) 126 Fantasy Points
33. Anthony Gonzalez-Indianapolis Colts
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 35
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 50
Gonzalez is entering his third season, has Peyton Manning throwing him the ball, and Marvin Harrison is no longer in town, everything is coming up roses for Gonzo or is it? Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are still Manning’s go-to-guys and now the Colts will likely look to run more with a healthy Joseph Addai and rookie Donald Brown. Gonzalez very well may have a breakout season but my money is solid this year, 2010 breakout.
(09’ Proj: 75 receptions, 890 yards, 6 touchdowns)
34. Sidney Rice-Minnesota Vikings
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 37
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 77
Rice is a tough nut to crack, he is 6’4”, only 22 years old, fast as lightening, and has scored four touchdowns in each of his first two years, BUT he has only had 46 career receptions including only 15 last season for 141 yards after posting 396 yards in his rookie season. I love the guys upside; especially if Brett Favre is under center but at this point Rice comes with a buyer beware tag.
(09’ Proj: 60 receptions, 800 yards, 7 touchdowns) 122 Fantasy Points
35. Donnie Avery-St. Louis Rams
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
I have to admit that I thought the Rams were crazy taking Avery as the first receiver off the board last April but the more I see this kid the more I like. He finished his rookie campaign with 674 yards receiving and three touchdowns on 53 receptions while tacking on 69 yards and a touchdown rushing. With Torry Holt now in Jacksonville Avery will be asked to be the main target for Marc Bulger. He needs some people to step up around him to take the pressure off. Bigger and better days are ahead for Avery.
(09’ Proj: 70 receptions, 900 yards, 5 touchdowns) 120 Fantasy Points
36. Steve Breaston-Arizona Cardinals
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: None
I will be the first to step up and admit I missed the boat on this guy last season but I was also smart enough to scoop him off the waiver wire. Breaston will again be behind two of the best receivers in the league so it could be difficult to improve on his 1006 yards and 77 receptions but there is room to improve on his three touchdowns. If Anquan Boldin or Larry Fitzgerald were out of the lineup for any length of time I would not hesitate to throw Breaston in my lineup.
(09’ Proj: 65 receptions, 880 yards, 5 touchdowns) 118 Fantasy Points
37. Kevin Walter-Houston Texans
Auction Value: $8
Bye Week: 10
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 65
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 72
Walter proved last season that his 800 yards and four touchdowns in 2007 were no fluke as he posted 899 yards and 8 touchdowns on 60 receptions, five less than in 2007. He is the perfect complement to Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels and while he likely will not put up numbers any better than last season, he is not likely to put up numbers any worse either.
(09’ Proj: 60 receptions, 800 yards, 6 touchdowns) 116 Fantasy Points
38. Donald Driver-Green Bay Packers
Auction Value: $6
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 25
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 11
Our prediction of 80 receptions, 1000 yards, and 5 touchdowns was right on the money last season but it could be more difficult to predict his performance this season. Driver is 34 and has seen his receptions and yardage totals go down in each of the past three seasons. Greg Jennings is clearly the number one receiver in Green Bay now and this is likely the year that Driver’s streak of five straight 1000+-yard seasons ends.
(09’ Proj: 60 receptions, 800 yards, 5 touchdowns) 110 Fantasy Points
39. Michael Crabtree-San Francisco 49ers
Auction Value: $6
Bye Week: 6
Rookie
The two-time Biletnikoff award winner was a man among boys in college but he will quickly figure out that life in San Fran is not as easy as in Lubbock. Aside from Frank Gore and probably Vernon Davis everybody is in a camp battle for playing time. I expect Crab Man to start out as the 9ers second or third receiver but to end the season as a go-to-guy.
(09’ Proj: 60 receptions, 800 yards, 5 touchdowns) 110 Fantasy Points
40. Mushin Muhammad-Carolina Panthers
Auction Value: $6
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 59
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 42
The guy continues to defy logic, posting 923 yards and five touchdowns on 65 receptions last season. He is 36 and it is hard to envision numbers better than last season but he has only put up less than three touchdowns in a season once in the past 11 years and that was in 2001 when he only played in 11 games. If Dwayne Jarrett steps up, Muhammad’s numbers could look more like the 570 yards and 3 touchdowns on 40 receptions he posted in 2007, but that is a big if at this point.
(09’ Proj: 60 receptions, 820 yards, 4 touchdowns) 106 Fantasy Points
41. Torry Holt-Jacksonville Jaguars
Auction Value: $6
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 12
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 4
After eight straight seasons of 1188 yards or more receiving, 81 or more receptions, and four or more touchdowns Holt fell off last season gaining only 796 yards and three touchdowns on just 64 receptions. Holt is 33 but nobody keeps in shape and knows the game better than Holt. I am not sold on his demise but I would rather rate him too low and call him a sleeper than rank him to high and have him bust. I know I would be willing to take a chance on a guy who has been so good for so long.

42. Ted Ginn-Miami Dolphins
Auction Value: $4
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 47
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 91
Ginn is entering his third season and has the talent to improve on his 790 yards and two touchdowns he posted last season on 56 receptions but it is difficult to put my finger on this guy still. The Dolphins have minimal talent at receiver and Chad Pennington is not exactly Dan Marino but Ginn looks to be the best the Dolphins have and his upside if much higher than most guys ranked this low.

43. Patrick Crayton-Dallas Cowboys
Auction Value: $4
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 38
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 83
After a promising 2007 season when Crayton posted 697 yards and seven touchdowns on 50 receptions, he had a disappointing 2008 compiling only 550 yards and 4 touchdowns on 39 receptions while losing his starting spot to Miles Austin. Crayton will have to beat out Austin again this year to have any real fantasy value but even as the third receiver for the Cowboys, he should put up similar numbers to last season.

2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 103
I am leery to take any Titans receiver as long as Kerry Collins is the quarterback but if you put a gun to my head, I guess Gage would be my choice; at least he put up six touchdowns last season. I have major concerns about the fact that his six touchdowns matched his previous five seasons combined, throw in the fact he has never eclipsed 55 receptions or 750 yards and I just cannot get too excited about Gage.

45. Derrick Mason-Baltimore Ravens
Auction Value: $4
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 34
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 45
Even at 35 he may be the Ravens best receiving threat this season but it is difficult to envision another 80 receptions, 1037 yards, and 5 touchdowns on 121 targets, 39 more than anybody else on the team. The Ravens did little to upgrade their receiving core so they have faith in Mason for at least one more season, it seems like a risky move, as is relying on Mason to be anything more than a low four or five receiver.

46. Joey Galloway-New England Patriots
Auction Value: $4
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 22
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 28
For the fourth consecutive season, Galloway has seen his receptions, yards, and touchdowns decrease, granted he only played in nine games last season but the point has been made. Galloway will be 38 in November and the only reason he is even ranked this high is that he went to the Patriots in the off-season. He likely will not see a lot of action but he has a chance for some big plays when he is on the field. This is likely the end for Joey G.

47. Isaac Bruce-San Francisco 49ers
Auction Value: $4

2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 48
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 34
Bruce just keeps adding to his Hall-of-Fame resume, another 835 yards and seven touchdowns on 61 receptions last season. He will be 37 in November and the 49ers have a lot of young receivers ready to push the old man out the door. There is not much left in the tank but Bruce has learned to utilize his smarts like Greg Maddox did at the end of his career, I do not see him matching last season’s numbers but Bruce could still end up as the 9ers best receiver.

48. Chris Chambers-San Diego Chargers
Auction Value: $4
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 24
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 22
I know there are some people calling their shot on a Chambers breakout season in 2009 but I have to say I just do not see it. Take away his career year in 2005 when he posted 1118 yards and 11 touchdowns on 82 receptions for the Dolphins and Chambers has never had more than 69 receptions or 963 yards in any of his other seven seasons. He did post 11 touchdowns in 2003 but his best besides his 11 touchdown years is seven, set in 2001 and 2004. The fact is that he has only 68 receptions in 24 games with the Chargers so why should I think that Philip Rivers is going to look his way more this season.

2007 Pre-Season Ranking: None
After posting one reception for five yards in his first three years, Hixon took advantage of his opportunity last year, compiling 596 yards and two touchdowns on 43 receptions. There is a good chance that he starts opposite Steve Smith to start the season but I am leery about a guy who did not do anything his first three years in the league. I could be completely wrong about him but at this point I just do not see him as anything special and I fully expect Smith and rookie Hakeem Nicks to be the starters at some point.

He is fast, real fast; he has a career average of 21.6 yards per reception. That is all folks, there is nothing else to see here, you do not have to go home but you cannot stay here. Seriously though that is all Henderson has to offer. In five years, he has never had more than 32 receptions, 793 yards, or 5 touchdowns in any season. His value is in leagues that award bonus points for long touchdowns.

51. Juaquin Iglesias-Chicago Bears
Auction Value: $2
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
Oklahoma receivers have not been very successful lately at the next level but I like Iglesias’s chances to break the trend and have a very successful career. He has good size, decent speed, and all the intangibles to make him a great fantasy receiver, especially with Jay Cutler under center. I would not be surprised if Iglesias puts up the best numbers of any 2009 rookie receiver.

Jenkins is not a bad receiver but he has too many concentration lapses and just does not use his 6’4” frame to his benefit the way he should. The addition of Tony Gonzalez now means Jenkins will be at best the Falcons fourth option so anything more than last season would be a surprise.

Austin had a three game streak last season that had fantasy owners thinking they found a diamond in the rough but after posting 174 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions during those three games, he got injured and ended the season with only 278 yards and three touchdowns on 13 receptions. I expect him to be behind Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton, making him at best the Cowboys fourth option but if he beats out Crayton and Williams continues to struggle Austin could become a steal.

2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 21
After a promising sophomore season in 2006 in which he posted 939 yards and five touchdowns on 67 receptions he has only combined for 1236 yards and three touchdowns on 89 receptions. With Derrick Mason nearing the end of his career and the Ravens doing little to strengthen their receiving core, Clayton will get every opportunity to have a breakout season and while I would not be shocked if it happened, I just cannot go out that far on a limb, I am heavy after all.

55. Earl Bennett-Chicago Bears
Auction Value: $2
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 89
Bennett did not catch a single pass during his rookie campaign last season but the addition of his college teammate Jay Cutler along with rookie Juaquin Iglesias should only help. I like Bennett’s upside but even the numbers below may be too high for this season.

56. Darrius Heyward-Bey-Oakland Raiders
Auction Value: $2

Rookie
He is big, fast, and young and he is the biggest boom/bust player in the entire 2009 draft in my mind. I can just picture the huddle as JaMarcus Russell is using a stick writing plays in the dirt and Heyward-Bey is always the X with the straight line as Russell confirms the play “D.H.B. you just run and I’ll get you the rock.” OK maybe he actually has more ability than that but right now he looks like a glorified Devery Henderson to me but the Raiders are due to pick a boom.

We thought Bess was an interesting prospect who has Wes Welker type of ability but even we were surprised by his 554 yards on 54 receptions last season. Now the question is what does he do for an encore? I do not expect much more this season but with only Ted Ginn and Greg Camarillo as real competition it is difficult to peg exactly what will Bess will do this season.

After posting 512 yards and 4 touchdowns on 38 receptions in his first three combined seasons Bradley had 389 yards and 3 touchdowns on 30 receptions in just 10 games last season for the Chiefs. The addition of Matt Cassell and exit of Tony Gonzalez makes the 6’2” Bradley a very intriguing sleeper candidate this season.

2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 108
Engram is 36 years old and honestly what has he ever done? Sure, he had 1147 yards and 6 touchdowns on 94 receptions in 2007, all career highs but considering he has played 13 years count me as not impressed. His career averages are 50 receptions, 591 yards, and 3 touchdowns. He will likely be the Chiefs slot receiver this season but numbers much better than his career averages would be a shock.

60. Antwaan Randle El-Washington Redskins
Auction Value: $1

2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 106
He throws, he runs, he catches, he returns punts but he just does not get enough touches to have any real fantasy value. His 53 receptions last season and 4 receiving touchdowns were both career highs. His 728 yards he put up in 2007 is as good as it gets. He adds minimal added value in leagues that reward points for receivers that pass, run, and for returns but his ceiling and upside are low.

2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 116
After missing his entire rookie season in 2007 due to injury, he played in nine games last season and showed some promise against the Steelers in week five when he posted 107 yards on 6 receptions. He only ended the season with 217 yards on 16 receptions but if he can do that to the Steelers, he can do it to anybody. With Dennis Northcutt just traded to the Lions Walker has an excellent opportunity to start opposite Torry Holt and while it is difficult to still predict more than below, I love his upside. His numbers below are very conservative.

Branch has played a complete 16 game season exactly one time in his seven-year career with career bests of 78 receptions, 998 yards, and 5 touchdowns. He did show promise last season by posting 412 yards and four touchdowns on 30 receptions in just eight games. He has always had promise but he just is not a guy you can rely on.

I have always liked Floyd’s potential and his 6’5” frame but year after year, he continues to disappoint. He did post career highs across the board last season by posting 465 yards and four touchdowns on 27 receptions. He will again be Philip Rivers’s fifth best option but he may see time again in the red zone.

After putting up 160 yards and two touchdowns including a game winner for the Dolphins in 2007 Camarillo posted 613 yards and two touchdowns last season on 55 receptions in just 11 games. He will compete with Ted Ginn and Davone Bess to be Chad Pennington’s go-to-guy and while I like Ginn’s chances, the best I cannot argue with the numbers he may have posted over a complete 16 game season. I still do not expect a big breakout campaign but he very well could surprise.

I liked Stuckey when he was at Clemson and I liked what I saw on just 32 receptions last season, 359 yards and three touchdowns. He will compete with David Clowney and Brad Smith to start opposite Jerricho Cotchery this season. I like Clowney and Stuckey to be in a very tight race and end up two and three. Both have good value in my mind, especially if Mark Sanchez becomes the quarterback the Jets believe he will be.

Auction Value: $1

Morgan showed promise as a rookie compiling 319 yards and three touchdowns on 20 receptions in 12 games last season. The 9ers have a mess of receivers buying for time this season so Morgan will have to stand out if he wants to see the field more this season. I like his upside but it could be a whole lot of receiver by committee this season in San Fran, limiting all 9ers receivers’ value but Morgan has as good of shot as anybody to be a standout.

I love this kid, I think he is going to be a flat out stud, just not this season. I believe he will see some time but I expect the Giants to ease him in, but with that said, I would also not be shocked if he doubled the predictions below. I expect him and Steve Smith to be a very solid 1-2 punch in a couple of years.

First, I have a question for the Hokies, how in the world did you have Clowney, Josh Morgan, and Eddie Royal a couple of years ago and not make more noise? OK, anyway. I like Clowney’s potential but he will have to beat out Chansi Stuckey and Brad Smith for the honor of starting opposite Jerricho Cotchery. I think Stuckey has a slight edge but Clowney could have some value as a third receiver if Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens is competent. I look for Clowney to take his game up a notch in 2010.

After putting up 676 yards and two touchdowns on 47 receptions as a rookie in 2007 Jones only saw 20 balls come his way last year in 10 games. As long as he is healthy, he should be the Packers number three receiver although he has to keep Jordy Nelson off his back. As soon as old man Donald Driver gets out of the way, I like his fantasy potential. Maybe 2010.

I have to admit that I was not a fan of the Packers taking Nelson in the 2008 draft but his 366 yards and 2 touchdowns on 33 receptions proved me that the Packers have faith in him for good reason. He will battle James Jones for the Packers third receiver spot this season and while I like Jones better it would not be a surprise if Nelson were to be the number two receiver in a year or two.

There is a mess at the receiver position with J.H.L. battling rookie Darrius Heyward-Bey, Javon Walker, and Chaz Schilens for the top two spots. Higgins showed some promise last season collecting 366 yards and four touchdowns on his 22 receptions. I expect Heyward-Bey to win one spot and Higgins has as good of a chance as anybody at this point. I am not predicting much this season but I do like the possibility of bigger and better things.

He has never posted more than 36 receptions, 605 yards, or played in more than 14 games but he does have 19 career touchdowns in 47 games including six in 2005 and 9 in 2006. There is no doubt that Henry has talent and has a nose for the end zone but it will not matter unless he figures out how to get his head on straight. Assuming he does and Carson Palmer is 100 percent then Henry has excellent potential value.

There is no rhyme or reason with this dude, in his second season he busts out for 68 receptions, 1006 yards, and 9 touchdowns, the next two years he combined for 520 yards and three touchdowns on 48 receptions. Then in 2007, he broke out for 694 yards and 9 touchdowns on 50 receptions. Last season he played in one game while collecting 60 yards and one touchdown so maybe he was on his way to two consecutive successful seasons but we will never know. He is coming off a serious injury and will have to prove to me he is still in 2007 mode before I take a shot on him.

Harvin scored in every game last season for the Gators and even ran for over 100 yards in the National Championship game against Oklahoma. Harvin can do it all, throw, run, catch, return kicks and punts, sell popcorn, you name it. The Vikings plan on putting in 10 to 15 new plays just for Harvin and there is talk about implementing the wildcat offense to take advantage of his talents. Harvin feels like a boom or bust guy with a no sky limit. Rookie receivers usually struggle but the numbers below could easily be doubled if he lives up to the hype.

He has just been traded to the Lions which means he is likely to continue to be a factor in the return game and will battle Bryant Johnson and Ronald Curry for playing time. I look for Northcutt to continue to do what he always has done.

Burton averaged only one reception a game last season but you still could see that he has something special if he gets the chance. With Torry Holt in Jacksonville, he could get his shot this season. He will battle Laurent Robinson and rookie Brooks Foster to start along with Donnie Avery. Robinson has the inside track but even as a third receiver Burton has a chance to have better value if Marc Bulger could get his groove back.

The speedster out of Louisville had a solid rookie season hauling in 23 receptions for 320 yards and a touchdown, added 69 yards rushing and a touchdown on 12 carries and even took a punt return to the house. Roddy White and Michael Jenkins are on top of the depth chart but Douglas should have cemented himself as the third receiver and it is not out of the question that he could supplant Jenkins as the starter at some point. With Tony Gonzalez now on the roster it will be difficult for Douglas to have a lot of value as the fourth option but I love the kids future upside.

88. Limas Sweed-Pittsburgh Steelers
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 94
Sweed did not exactly tear it up during his rookie season, compiling 64 yards on six receptions but with Nate Washington now in Tennessee Sweed will battle newly acquired Shaun McDonald for the third receiver position. I am not expecting much this season but at 6’4” there is a chance that the Steelers will use him in the red zone which could give him some value, but I think he takes his step up next season.
(09’ Proj: 33 receptions, 420 yards, 1 touchdown) 48 Fantasy Points
89. Brandon Stokley-Denver Broncos
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 79
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 86
Stokley will be 34 when the season starts and aside from his magical 2004 campaign where he hauled down 68 receptions for 1077 yards, and 10 touchdowns he has never posted more than 49 receptions, 635 yards, or 5 touchdowns. He will have to fight Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Lloyd for time and at this point in his career there may not be much value left.
(09’ Proj: 40 receptions, 420 yards, 1 touchdown) 48 Fantasy Points
90. Kenny Britt-Tennessee Titans
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 7
Rookie
On paper Britt is everything you want in a future fantasy star, he is 6’3”, only 20 years old, has good speed, and is a good route runner, of course he also drops too many passes, lacks strength, and has a T.O. ego. I think the Titans will bring him along slowly and even if they throw him in the mix right away, I do not see a lot of potential as long as Kerry Collins is under center. Britt is a high risk/high reward guy.
(09’ Proj: 30 receptions, 350 yards, 2 touchdowns) 47 Fantasy Points
91. Josh Reed-Buffalo Bills
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 124
I am not a fan but at least you know what you get with Reed. He will have some competition from Roscoe Parrish, Steve Johnson, and James Hardy but Reed proves year after year that he is a solid slot man no matter who suits up around him.
(09’ Proj: 40 receptions, 410 yards, 1 touchdown) 47 Fantasy Points
92. Jeremy Maclin-Philadelphia Eagles
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 4
Rookie
I believe Maclin will be a stud but it will take some time. Look for him to be a force in the return game this season while battling Reggie Brown, Jason Avant, and Hank Baskett for playing time at receiver. I expect him to show flashes of things to come in the future.
(09’ Proj: 28 receptions, 400 yards, 1 touchdowns) 46 Fantasy Points
93. Brandon Jones-San Francisco 49ers
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 90
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 78
After four years of underachieving in Tennessee Jones takes his act across the country to San Fran this season. He will fight for time and yards with Isaac Bruce, Arnaz Battle, Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, and Jason Hill. At best, I see Jones as the 9ers third receiver with minimal upside.
(09’ Proj: 38 receptions, 400 yards, 1 touchdown) 46 Fantasy Points
94. Laurent Robinson-St. Louis Rams
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 9
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 54
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 104
After a promising rookie campaign where we saw Robinson put up 437 yards and a 74-yard touchdown on 37 receptions he only saw action in six games last season compiling 52 yards on five receptions. Landing in St. Louis gives him a chance to be the number two receiver behind Donnie Avery. I have always liked Robinson’s potential but until I see more production, I cannot project him any higher but I love his sleeper potential.
(09’ Proj: 30 receptions, 360 yards, 1 touchdown) 42 Fantasy Points
95. Jason Avant-Philadelphia Eagles
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 4
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: None
Avant is a chain mover; of his 62 career receptions, 42 of them have been good for first downs. He does not put up a lot of receptions or yards but he will put up a touchdown or two and is exactly what you want on your team, just not your fantasy team.
(09’ Proj: 30 receptions, 360 yards, 1 touchdowns) 42 Fantasy Points
96. Demetrius Williams-Baltimore Ravens
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 7
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 71
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 65
Since giving us a taste of his ability during his rookie season Williams has only found himself healthy for 16 combined games the past two years. Derrick Mason is old and Mark Clayton is an underachiever, which leaves the door wide open for Williams to display his talent. I do not see a reason to take a chance on him at this point but if he stays healthy and is a part of the Ravens game plan I would be willing to give him a shot, a couple of big ifs at this point.
(09’ Proj: 25 receptions, 350 yards, 1 touchdowns) 41 Fantasy Points
97. Robert Meachem-New Orleans Saints
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 78
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 76
The highly touted Meachem missed his entire rookie season on IR and only had 12 receptions last season but he did make the most of them putting up 289 yards and 3 touchdowns. There is no denying Meachem’s talent but his game needs a lot of work, which is why he very well could find himself behind Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Devery Henderson, and Adrian Arrington. Throw Jeremy Shockey and Reggie Bush into the mix and all of a sudden, Meachem finds himself as a possible seventh option, ouch. He still has more upside than most of the receivers listed ahead of him on the depth chart and he can improve his stock dramatically during camp and the pre-season.
(09’ Proj: 20 receptions, 350 yards, 1 touchdown) 41 Fantasy Points
98. Jason Hill-San Francisco 49ers
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 6
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 84
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 127
I like Hill but at this point I do not know that he will get enough looks to warrant much fantasy value this season. The 9ers receiver camp battle is definitely worth watching because the top two or three should have some solid fantasy value but at this point, it is difficult to predict who will get the nod, at this point I just see Hill as the odd man out but I still believe his potential is evident.
(09’ Proj: 33 receptions, 350 yards, 1 touchdown) 41 Fantasy Points
99. Devin Thomas-Washington Redskins
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 8
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: 75
Thomas was arguably the most disappointing rookie last season, posing 120 yards on 15 receptions. The Redskins are far from loaded at receiver so there is no reason why Thomas should not win the third receiver role and eventually overtake Antwaan Randel El for the number two role but I do not see that happening this season. I need to see Thomas put up some numbers before I take a chance on him.
(09’ Proj: 30 receptions, 330 yards, 1 touchdown) 39 Fantasy Points
100. Rashied Davis-Chicago Bears
Auction Value: $0
Bye Week: 5
2008 Pre-Season Ranking: None
2007 Pre-Season Ranking: 114
Davis is not the most talented receiver on the Bears roster but he does the little things that teams love. He will battle Devin Hester, Juaquin Iglesias, Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, and even John Broussard for playing time but to be honest I do not think it really matters because the 35 receptions, 445 yards, and 2 touchdowns he posted last season may very well be his ceiling.
(09’ Proj: 30 receptions, 330 yards, 1 touchdown) 39 Fantasy Points
There were a number of guys that did not end up in our top 100 simply based on their 2009 predicted fantasy points but they are names that you should be aware of because of their sleeper potential:

Mohamed Massaquoi-Cleveland Browns
Mike Thomas-Jacksonville Jaguars
Malcolm Kelly-Washington Redskins

The following players are free agents who have not signed with a team at this time but they have fantasy potential if signed in the right situation-
Plaxico Burress, Matt Jones, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Williams, Drew Carter, Amani Toomer, Ike Hilliard
