JOSH MORGAN TEAM TAKE

Morgan suffered a groin injury and other maladies which put a damper on his rookie season. However, the 49'ers love him and want him to be starting for them this season. Considering the terribly weak San Francisco receiving corps, he should be a lock for one of the wideout slots and his numbers can’t help but improve.

From a fantasy perspective, the 49ers certainly don’t have the feel of a team that is going to provide much in the passing game in 2009. That doesn’t bode well for this second year man out of Virginia Tech. The very definition of a late, late round flier. Probably nothing to get too excited about here.

I really don’t believe Josh Morgan has much fantasy value at this point in time. That can change as the season rolls on, but a receiver is only as good as the guy throwing him the ball. San Francisco has some major question marks at the quarterback position. They may choose to address that during the upcoming draft, but it will still take some time for that quarterback and Josh Morgan to get into a rhythm.

Had a quiet rookie season but did have a 5 rec, 86 yard, 1 touchdown game in New York. Has a chance to have a more significant impact this year with the Niners and there are worse players to take a flier on. Will be way under the radar heading into drafts.

Second-year receiver with home-run capability but raw fundamentals. The 49ers are still a mess at quarterback, so none of their receivers are advisable candidates to be weekly starters. Morgan, however, deserves some scouting, and owners should monitor his progress this season with dynasty considerations.

I’m intrigued by Morgan who has as much talent as any receiver in last year’s draft class, but was also known as an underachiever while at Virginia Tech. He had a solid rookie campaign, 20 receptions, 319 yards, three touchdowns and plays for a team with few proven receivers. Until the 49ers get a proven quarterback under center it would be difficult for any 9ers receiver to make a splash, but I like Morgan’s potential in '10 and beyond.

Mazzola touched on the key above.  Missed four games as a rookie and, as with any nagging NFL injury over the course of the season, it's impossible to quantify to what degree it hampered him in others.  I'm actually encouraged by Morgan's 20 catch, 3 touchdown inaugural campaign when you consider it within the framework of 12 games as a non-starter.  Flashed nice upside in two preseason games before injury.  In dynasty, I'd do everything in my power to find a way to stash him on a developmental slot.  Likely at least a year away.
