JOE FLACCO TEAM TAKE

If the Ravens can improve their receiving corp, Flacco has a chance to be a low-end No. 1 QB as soon as this year, but I consider him more of a number 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

Rookie quarterback surprised many by leading the Ravens to the AFC Championship game. There will be a lot of people that will think the stats now follow within the next few years. I don’t think so. Flacco did a great job of just staying out of the way in 2008. But the Ravens are not going to change their philosophy and even if they did, I’m not sold on him parlaying that into becoming an elite fantasy quarterback… ever. The only way I’m considering him in 2009 is if I’m starting a dynasty league. And even then, I’d have to be totally out of options to put him onto a taxi squad position.

I think Flacco proved enough last season to allow the Ravens to put more games in his hands. But they won’t get carried away. This team will still be a run-first, and play tough defense oriented team.

You’ve got to love a rookie quarterback that starts all 16 games, throws for just under 3000 yards with 14 touchdowns, adds two more on the ground and even catches a 43 yard pass albeit not for a score. And if all that weren’t enough his team went out and got him L.J. Smith and is showing interest in Anquan Boldin. If they get the latter then I would be even higher on Flacco.

The Ravens really need to get this kid some playmakers at the receiver position.  He is talented, has a strong arm and will continue to get better at reading coverages.  If he can get just one elite option to throw to, he can be a certifiable top top threat quarterback someday.

Unibrow...err, Joe Flacco had an exceptional rookie campaign despite a passing offense that ranked 28th in the NFL. It’s not that hard for opposing defenses; double team Derrick Mason. The Ravens need to surround their fledgling quarterback with more weapons or he won’t budge on draft boards.

Question: What does the Diet Pepsi NFL rookie of the year and the first rookie QB in NFL history to win two playoff games translate into in the fantasy world? A backup QB on your fantasy team whom you'd best not be leaning on. Ouch, sorry Joe.

Pencil me in verbatim on Robb's thoughts above.  Much the same as my Matt Ryan thoughts this year, I see little (fantasy) progression in year #2.  Flacco possesses a live arm and poise under pressure.  He's going to develop into a very solid NFL QB, but so long as he's propped up by a top 7 NFL defense and an elite RBBC, John Harbaugh will keep the training wheels on as long as possible.
