Had a productive year, no doubt about it. Call me a skeptic, but he had five games with 0 touchdowns thrown and his lack of a big time arm always scares me away. Should continue to produce with a crop of young, developing receivers but don’t count on him every week.

I have always held the belief that Chad Pennington is a good quarterback when healthy. Last year proved that. Notice I said “good” and not “great.” He also plays for the Miami Dolphins who, like several other teams, are thin at receiver. Still, he is one of the better backup quarterbacks available on your draft board this season.

3,653 yards and 19 touchdowns isn’t awful, especially considering the cast of receivers he was forced to throw the ball to. But it also isn’t the numbers you want from your starting fantasy quarterback. There is talk in Miami that Chad Henne could be the man this year but my money is on Pennington starting again this season Even if he does he likely won’t put up numbers better than 2008.

Pennington performed better than anyone expected last season and deserves all the kudos he gets for it. Nevertheless, he has only played a full slate of games twice over the course of his career and the odds of him doing it again seem long. If he falters, Chad Henne will be the guy to own in Miami.

Checkdown Chad had a good year in 2008, providing solid value for fantasy owners as a spot starter. However, Chad will face some big obstacles if he hopes to approach 3,600 yards and 20 touchdowns again. The biggest is the strength of schedule the Dolphins will face in 2009. By the numbers, it’s the toughest in the NFL. If the Dolphins struggle early in the season (Atlanta, Indy and SD to start the year), then they could decide to start the transition to second year man Chad Henne at some point during the season. Likely only a bye week starter, but in this case, you may want to make sure your number 1 quarterback’s bye week is early in the season.

Set a career-high in yardage in 2008. Pennington enters the final year of a two-year contract without any sort of extension being discussed, making this season an audition for the aging veteran. He’s not going to put up the numbers to qualify as a No. 1 quarterback, but he could be a great spot-start.

I'm just trying to find a positive spin to put on Pennington and can't seem to find it. When, in your tenth season in the league, you set career high's for both completions and yardage, AND 2nd best TD totals and you're still not a number one fantasy option? That tells you all you really need to know. Good football decisions might keep him on the field another 16 games this year but combine younger, more athletic options on deck with the fact that Pennington has a spotty injury history and I'm a big skeptic.
