BO SCAIFE TEAM TAKE

Ranked a respectable #5 in the AFC in receptions by a TE last season. He has improved every year but the ceiling for him is quite low. The fact is, his production can be found by many TE’s so don’t draft him earlier than he should be taken.

If you google “bye week TE”, I’m betting you might get a few Bo Scaife hits. Scaife had a few decent games last year, but the majority featured 2-3 catches. I’m not against him being your No. 2 tight end, but I don’t see a lot of upside with Scaife, and even at that, its hard for me to recommend even drafting a second tight end when you could take a preseason gamble on a high risk/high upside skill position player instead and picking up your bye week tight end the week before.

A hard-nosed veteran who has yet to see the opportunity of playing in a wide-open offense. Not the most physically gifted player at his position, he found his niche as a three-down end with great hands. An unrestricted free agent, his value will hinge greatly depending on where he signs. Will never be a top-tier tight end but could crack the top-10 with a few more red-zone looks.

Scaife didn't appear to miss his old Longhorn teammate Vince Young very much as he posted career highs across the board. He also turned in several spectacular efforts last year, including 105 yards against Jacksonville and catching 10 balls against Chicago. Scaife is expected to explore free agency but will probably not end up leaving Tennessee, so you can expect similar numbers this year in that scenario, he'd still be the Titans' best receiver.

I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that there's a ceiling on just how good a tight end Bo Scaife can become.  But I'm not certin 2008 was it.  The negatives?  Less than prototypical TE size (6'3 - 249lb) and he doesn't have the straight line speed that earmarks other great TE's in the league.  But he does have great awareness of secondary "pockets" and shields defenders well with his body.  Targeted 84 times last season and hauling in a healthy 69% of them, Scaife is one of those tight end's that would benefit from NOT being his team's best receiver. Kerry Collins' aging arm sticking around one more season would help the cause as well.

After the Titans went and got Alge Crumpler I figured this guy was done, but he showed it was Alge who was done. I think Scaife is solid (but not special), as he has yet to put up more than two touchdowns in a season.
