BEN WATSON TEAM TAKE

Watson has never cashed in on the considerable potential he had as an athletic, receiving tight end in an elite offense. The Patriots now have so many options in the passing game that Watson’s peak 2006 season, when he was targeted 91 times, can only be acknowledged as an aberration. Leave him undrafted.

Watson had his worst season since his 2004 rookie campaign pulling down only 22 receptions for 209 yards, and two touchdowns. It’s clear the Pat’s no longer believe Watson is a top notch tight end and signed Chris Baker in the off-season to compete for the starting job. Watson is more hype than substance at this point and even in larger leagues, there's a handful of better lottery tickets in the later rounds.

Like every other Patriots receiver, Watson theoretically should benefit from having Tom Brady back in the saddle. However, his lack of involvement in the offense and his inconsistency means you just can’t count on him for much. Newly signed Chris Baker will cut into his workload some as well.

Ben’s numbers took an expected dip last season after the injury to Mr. Brady. Expect more red zone looks for the hulking TE from Georgia as his numbers should be similar to those posted in 2007.

Ben Watson has fallen off the map. He now resides in fantasy football purgatory along with fellow tight ends Bubba Franks, Anthony Becht, and Jerramy Stevens. Ok, maybe I went a little too far. His fantasy value should rise with the return of Tom Brady. Still, only a smidge above that “undraftable until you show me different” tier.

You don’t need a backup tight end this badly. Just pick one up on your bye week.

There have always been external factors at play that make Ben Watson an intriguing sleeper option.  But that has ended up not mattering in five seasons so why would it matter now?  Yawn.
