SEE ALSO: FANTASY FOOTBALL TRADER'S IN-SEASON WEEKLY RANKINGS QB / RB / WR / TE
A quick note about my rankings. Many highly respected FF authorities subscribe to the theory that youth, relative to positional lifespan in the NFL, is a fools errand to account for beyond roughly three years because the FF landscape changes too quickly. I don't happen to be one of them. I have had a great deal of success in the last 15 years in my dynasty leagues by heavily weighting youth in my rankings. These rankings are as top-heavy with young talent as any source you'll find. So adjust accordingly if you are more of a "proven commodity" kind of fantasy owner.
Ages are how old player will be Sept. 09

QUARTERBACKS

TIER ONE:
1. Drew Brees, NO Age: 30 b - td - sys
TD's up and sacks down in four consecutive years. Three years Peyton's junior gives him a sliver of an edge.
2. Peyton Manning , IND Age: 33 i - b - td – sys
Bulletproof. Finished just outside of top 5 in what was universally thought of as a "down" year. Age factor looming.
TIER TWO:
3. Phillips Rivers, SD Age: 27 y - b - sys - int
Gamer that doesn't melt in the pressure-cooker. Put the question to bed of how he would respond without Tomlinson crutch in '08.
4. Matt Schaub, HOU Age 28 y - i - sys
Highest rated QB with a red mark against him. Never played > 11 games or thrown > 15 TD's. But dripping with upside. Young/talented supporting cast. I think he can double career high touchdowns in 2009 and never looks back. Tall prototypical QB and ability to make any throw. Houston's been constructing the "Death Star" on offense for three years now and with Slaton, construction is complete.
5.Tony Romo, DAL Age: 29 b - td - sys - int
Up/down season and at the end of the day, threw more TD's than 5 QB's in only 13 starts.
6. Jay Cutler, CHI Age: 26 y - i - b - sys
Has the skill set to be the next great one. Rate of growth in young career phenomenal. I might be overreacting sliding him here from #3 post-trade to Chicago but not yet convinced that he has cast to remain elite in Chicago.
7. Aaron Rodgers, GB Age: 25 y - i - td - sys
Quietly amassed 4,000 yds and 28 TD's in first year as starter. Possibly best top 10 value in startup dynasty. Deceptively young.
8. Tom Brady, NE Age: 32 i - b - td - sys - int
Early news on knee injury not favorable. For '09 could be great value here or spectacular bust. Which is why this slot "feels" right.
TIER THREE:
9. Matt Ryan,ATL Age: 24 y - i - sys
Boistered by premiere running game. Paying for "upside" here as 15 TD's doesn't scream #1 QB. Learning curve looms but talent undeniable.
10.Ben Roethlisberger, PIT Age: 27 y - i - b - sys - int
Suspect upside. Monster 32 TD campaighn in '07 only season he threw more than 17. Age is big + but decision making and physical play concerning.
11. Matt Hasselbeck, SEA Age 34 y - b - i - td - int
Has never played back-to-back 16 game seasons. Also never failed to throw for less than 24 TD's when playing 16 game season. Age creeping.
12.Trent Edwards, BUF Age: 25 y - b - sys
What he has done given age & below average coaching/supporting cast is encouraging. I believe ability is there if external factors line up.
TIER FOUR:
13. Donovan McNabb, PHI Age: 32 i - b - td - int
Excellent platoon QB to ride the big spurts when they come. Seven multi-TD games in '08 but only 23 total TD's tells the story. Need plan B with him.
14. Matt Cassel, KCC Age 26 y - b - td - int
Chiefs' running game no longer dominant - more complimentary and defense needs serious overhaul to vault to mere respectibility. Cassel will get boatload of attempts and age dictates he leapfrog better (older) redraft options.
15. Kyle Orton, DEN Age 26 y - sys
Complete wildcard in dynasty formats. Ten TD's in a 5 game Sept/Oct '08 stretch pre-injury. Lept four spots from trade earlier this month. Could be a big mover on my dynasty board in Training Camp.
16. Kurt Warner, ARI Age: 38 y - b - td - sys - int
If only he was 28. Needle on the gas tank below E but deserves to slip no further, if only for the potential of one more 16 game season.
TIER FIVE:
17.Carson Palmer, CIN Age: 29 i - b - td - sys
Elected no surgery on damaged tendon and comeback no lock. If you think this is too low - ask yourself, "Would you feel safe with him as your #1?"
18. Eli Manning, NYG Age: 28 y - i - td - sys
Vaults to tier three with Plaxico. Fizzled in December but fourth consecutive campaign with 20+ TD's. Punished for issues beyond his control.
19. Joe Flacco, BAL Age: 24 y - sys - int
Ditto Matt Ryan. Needs more talent around him to flourish. John Harbaugh dedicated to smashmouth and Flacco could suffer "tight reign" for years.
20. JaMarcus Russell, OAK Age 24 y - b
Quietly warmed up in Dec. while everyone's backs were turned. Closed out year with three multi-TD games. Underrated "Hold" in dynasty. Crabtree?
21. Brady Quinn, CLE Age 24 y - b
I'm a doubter. Both TD's came vs. Denver at home. Still, a 24 y.o. starting first rounder throwing to Braylon (for now) holds value on circumstance alone.
22. David Garrard, JAX Age 31 b
Upside absent. Jack Del Rio places premium on ball control and defense but rotates staff like tires. No consistency but playmakers present.
TIER SIX:
23. Vince Young, TEN Age 25 y - b - sys - int
Headliner of the "just in case" tier. Still extremely young and talented but...oh, there's a laundry list of "buts".
24. Matt Lienart, ARI Age 26 y - sys - int
Ditto Vince Young. Finds himself ranked here despite his best efforts to NOT be. If Warner were younger and Fitzgerald mortal, we could forget him.
25. Chad Henne, MIA Age 24 y - sys - int
Pennington a solid stop-gap. Nothing more. Semi-emergence of myriad receiving options and baby-steps from O-line set intriguing stage for Henne.
RUNNING BACKS

TIER ONE:
1. Adrian Peterson, MIN Age: 24 y - b - td - sys - int
Total package. Put a dent in durability concerns in '08. Paltry 21 receptions in '08 unacceptable. If he was used less between the tackles and more in the passing game, Jones-Drew would be the top RB in tier two.
2. Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX Age: 24 y - i - b - td - ppr - int
Still never topped 200 rushing attempts in a single season but who cares? Thirty-eight combined touchdowns in three years (on limited touches) screams "elite" to me. Fred Taylor's done and opportunity increasing. Scores fantasy pts. in every phase of the game.
3. Chris Johnson, TEN Age: 23 y - b - td - ppr - sys
Tougher between the tackles than projected. Dinged up in December but too early in career to downgrade for that. If my opponent had one RB left on Monday Night Football needing a monster performance, other than A.P. this is the name I wouldn't want to see. A bit "flaky" but again, how much of that is just being a 23 year old? Touches should increase quickly.
4. Michael Turner, ATL Age 26 y - i - td - sys - int
Yeah, I'd say 17 touchdowns gives him the green light in TD heavy scoring formats. Over-used in Ryan's rookie year. Turner owners shouldn't be happy about 376 attemps this year. You read that right. Mike Smith as committed to the run as anybody.
TIER TWO:
5. Steven Jackson, STL Age: 26 y - i - b - td - sys - int
Explosive RB that doesn't lose ground to anybody not named "Peterson" in talent. Injuries likely by-product of declining supporting cast. No RB needs team to nail draft more than Jackson.
6. Jonathan Stewart, CAR Age: 22 y - i - td - sys
Prototype. At 5-10, 235 lbs Stewart is built for the long haul. Prorate his rookie numbers into a 300-carry campaign and you'd have 1,350 yds and over 16 touchdowns. A running back by committee featuring two studs never survives for long. Somebody either gets hurt or gets paid. At this spot, you might be paying for 1-2 more frustrating years but at age 22, time is what you and Stewart have.
7. Marshawn Lynch, BUF Age: 22 y - i - ppr - sys - int
Deceptive youth and consistency dictate he can't drop any lower. Receptions spiked from 18 in rookie year to 47 last year. Barely scratched together four-digit yardage and eight touchdowns last year - more indicative of supporting cast than anything. Circumstances beyond his control keep him looking up at Top 5.
8. Matt Forte, CHI Age: 23 y - ppr - sys
I'm not entirely convinced. But I wasn't entirely convinced about Micahel Turner either. Lacks the home run ability you like to see in your #1 RB and can't sustain insane # of touches - but who am I to argue with his '08 numbers, age and the fact that he's the only gig in Chi-town for right now.
9. DeAngelo WIlliams, CAR Age: 25 b - ppr - td - sys
Perfect storm in 2008. Went from one touchdown every 33 attempts in his career to one every 15 attempts last year. Reality lies somewhere in the middle. Born-again passion when they drafted Stewart. Only this high because he won't co-exist with Stewart in Carolina forever. And still very young.
10. Frank Gore, SF Age: 26 y - sys - int
Proved to be a smidge overrated last year as a top 5 RB but not by much. His talent has him clinging to top 10 but surrounded by extremely young/suspect supporting cast. Lack of other playmakers takes him out gameplan at times.
TIER THREE:
11. Brandon Jacobs, NYG Age: 27 y - i - b - ppr - td - sys
It's no wonder opinions are all over the board on this guy. He's either helped or hindered in all but one factor category above. We nailed this guy in our draftkit last year, saying he was a lock for double-digit toughdowns. That was of little consolation to his owners though when he missed three of the last six games, likely ending his owners playoff run in the process. Durability and stone hands aside, he's a top 5 RB behind the best O-Line in the NFL. Sadly, we can't set those things aside.
12. Clinton Portis, WAS Age: 28 i
From Jacobs to Portis who, doesn't really stand out in any factored category. Perennially undervalued what you see is what you get RB. Sheer amount of touches (742 in last two years) makes him a #1 RB. Steady touchdowns thrown in. Perfect #2 RB in the 2nd round if he makes it back to you. Any tier one RB paired with this guy and you're well ahead of the curve.
13. Brian Westbrook, PHI Age: 30 y - i - b - ppr - td - sys
Settle down Westbrook owners. I'm no hater. In my re-draft rankings he vaults to #4. This is purely an admission of the fact that the clock is ticking. Turns 30 before another down is played and drops like a rock when longevity added to equation. Top RB dinged for age.
14. Steve Slaton, HOU Age: 23 y - b - ppr - td - sys
Tough to pigeon-hole. Had 53% of his carries from week 11 and beyond and went ballistic with four 100 yd. games over the last seven. On one hand, proved he could do it. On the other, the Texans freely admit that's not how they drew it up, and would rather pair a bruiser with Slaton. Like SD RB Darren Sproles I don't think he's a workhorse RB. Also like Sproles, I'm not sure that matters. It says a lot that he's all green and I still have him this low.
15. Rashard Mendenhall, Age: 22 y - ppr - sys - int
Agree or not, at least at least you know I'm giving you my honest feel. Still the same uber-talented RB the ground oriented Steelers took with the 23rd overall pick. Above the waist season-ending injury carries zero long term concerns. In as good of a long-term situation as exists and I dare say this ranking could be low.
16. Ronnie Brown, Age: 27 i - sys
Most difficult of top 25 to slot. Only 7 RB's had more touchdowns. But take away monster four TD game and 22 RB's had more. End of season numbers make him "look" like stellar #2 but any Brown owner will tell you he did them no favors. Impossible to tell if he was hindered at all by brutal '07 knee injury. You wouldn't get strong argument from me if you wanted to push him up to bottom tier two or down into the low 20's.
TIER FOUR:
17. Felix Jones, DAL Age: 22 y - i - b - ppr - sys - int
Very special athlete that could end up being every bit Chris Johnson's peer. Was an outright nightmare to bring down outside of the tackles. I think his value might be as "under wraps" right now as it'll be in his entire career. Was just beginning to show what he could do in two games pre-injury (6-76-1 and 9-96-1). Both toe and hamstring injuries ominous; make him somewhat of a lottery ticket here. If he plays a full 16 games next year he'll be the cheapest #2 fantasy back in your draft.
18. Darren McFadden, OAK Age: 22 y - i - ppr
Second of the "talent yet to meet opportunity" tier. Injury-marred rookie campaign did nothing to quash concerns about his lower-body. Very much an unknown NFL commodity. Youth is an understatement - barely turns 22 before the season starts. Skyrockets or drops like a rock in '10 - no middle ground. I wouldn't want him as my #2 in '09 and he's ranked here because that statement could be downright laughable this time next year.
19. Pierre Thomas, NO Age: 24 y - sys
No fluke here. After week 1, failed to garner more than 6 attempts until week 11. No hotter RB weeks 11-16 (93-501-6) and earned himself a bona fide role heading into '09. With presence of a healthy Reggie Bush - upside limited but at 24 years old in the "What've you done for me lately?" NFL - he's a decent #2 - spectacular #3 long term.
20. Kevin Smith, DET Age: 22 y - ppr - sys
The stat that really spotlights Smith is - in 6 games where he toted the ball 20+ times, he failed to reach 88 yds. once (64 vs MIN). The fact that, of those six, four were in weeks 14-17 to close out the year means a great deal. New coaching staff or not.
21. Jamaal Charles, KC Age: 22 y - ppr - td
Giving him the green light in p.p.r. not because of numbers,. but showed ability in limited opportunity. Only double digit carry game was 18-108. His 5.3 yards per carry was #1 among rookie RBs with more than 50 carries. At 5'11" and 199 lbs. time will tell if he has ability to carry 18-20 times and stay healthy. Lacks flat out speed and there's a cap on upside.
TIER FIVE:
22. Reggie Bush, NO Age: 24 y - i - b - ppr - sys - int
Safe to say we have the book on Bush after 3 seasons. Great #2 fantasy back that you'd better have a Plan B ready and waiting for. Becomes a borderline #1 in p.p.r. An atrocious between the tackles RB that Sean Payton has learned to use effectively (that is, until he misses the 3.3 games he's averaged every year). Questionable heart. I see him as often in People magazine as on SportsCenter. Destined to yo-yo up & down rankings his entire career. Probably has a couple of top 5 fantasy seasons in him, one or two complete washouts and everything in between.
23. Jospeh Addai, IND Age: 26 ppr - sys - int
He's not very talented. Sort of the Jason Campbell of RB's. Need to pay attention to him because of the company he keeps as well as age. But emerging durability issues, lack of top gear and marginal fortitude has his arrow pointing down long-term. O-line partly to blame as well and that's no lock to improve.
24. Ryan Grant, GB Age: 26 b - sys
Popular '08 bust candidate in fantasy last year and made many look smart. 1,200 yds. looks pretty until factoring 312 carries and four touchdowns. Won't create on his own, which isn't necessarily bad if the Packers make strides along the O-line. Reality probably somewhere between '07 and '08.
25. LaDainian Tomlinson, SD Age: 30 y - ppr - sys
Shoots to #12 in my redraft rankings but it wasn't just L.T. in '08. O-line started to crack. Could have a bounceback '09 and make me look bad but at age 30 it can't be too far off. Gotta think his age starts affecting straight line speed even when healthy. No lock to house it anymore even after he gets by everybody. Toe/groin should heal but...
Can't believe I couldn't find a spot for:
Ray Rice - Age 22
Darren Sproles - Age 26
Willie Parker - Age 28
Willis McGahee - Age 27
WIDE RECEIVERS

TIER ONE
1. Larry Fitzgerald ARI, Age: 26 y - i - b - ppr - td - sys - int
Has missed a mere four games in five year career. Size. Speed. Hands. Work ethic. System that values the pass. If you could start from scratch and build the perfect blend of player and situation, this is it - with the one teeny-tiny caveat of Warner's age.
2. Calvin Johnson DET, Age: 24 y - b - ppr - td - int
Might be even more gifted than Fitz if it's genetically possible. I look at what he did with a QB corp that was cobbled together with duct tape and am dumbfounded. The fact that he's 24 years old is frightening.
TIER TWO
3. Greg Jennings GBP, Age: 26 y - b - ppr - td - int - sys
Green lights across the board with the minor exception that he still hasn't played 16 games in young career. Poised to be very good for very long time. Just a tick below tier one in terms of talent.
4. Andre Johnson HOU, Age: 28 b - ppr - int - sys
Really bloomed in December with a 200 yd. game and a seperate two-touchdown game in the fantasy playoffs. Still yet to catch more than eight touchdowns in any one season, but when you watch the guy play you see that's a mere formality. Not old but no longer young.
5. Steve Smith CAR, Age: 30 b - ppr - sys
Not really prototypical at anything. From his size (5'9" - 185) to his "me vs. the world" attitude, Smith has always been tough to pigeonhole. Hard to believe he's had one season of more than eight touchdowns in his career. This high because nobody would lift an eyebrow if he was the best fantasy WR this year and there's few cats you can say that about.
6. Roddy White ATL, Age: 27 y - i - b - ppr - int - sys
Looks to be Matt Ryan's main beneficiary for the next five years. I think he takes a baby-step back in '09 for the simple fact that things fell perfectly on '08. Defenses will see Michael Turner coming and do everything humanly possible to put the ball in the young Ryan's hands. Very good WR in emerging offense.
7. Brandon Marshall DEN, Age: 25 y - i - b - ppr - td - int
Can this guy take over a game or what?! If I needed a 30+ fantasy pt. performance on Monday Night Football (excluding Fitz), this would be the name I'd hope to draw from the hat. Flaky dude and difficult to like. He'll burn bridges before leaving Dener, but you cannot deny ability.
8. Marques Colston NOS, Age: 26 y - i - b - ppr - sys - td - int
The only thing seperating him from Jennings is health. Only started 32 games of a possible 48 in three year career. I should have him at #5. This feels low because the '08 injury was above the waist. When he's absent, other options always emerge - which leaves me to wonder how much of Colston is really Drew Brees.
9. Reggie Wayne IND, Age: 30 i - b - ppr - td - sys - int
Not old enough to ding for age yet, but left the 20-something crowd last November. Bubble of invincibility on offense popped last year along with Peyton Manning's bursa. Still a great WR but Indy is a marquee example of why O-line analysis is booming in FF's inner circles.
TIER THREE
10. Dwayne Bowe KCC, Age: 25 y - i - b - ppr - sys - int
The stars are beginning to align. Lacks the flat out speed you'd like in a #1 fantasy receiver (his longest rec. last year was 36 yds) but monster target numbers and Cassel upgrades everything across the board. BIG bump here for youth. Slides outside top 15 in my redraft rankings.
11. Randy Moss NEP, Age: 32 y - i - b - ppr - td - sys
Staying true to my youth heavy rankings, the superstar Moss slides outside of top 10. Is only outside top 5 for age and Brady's health. Clock ticking for dangerous WR that nobody wants to see in opponent's lineup.
12. Anquan Boldin, Age: 28 b - ppr - td - sys - int
The fourth sub-16 starts season of his six year career. Played 24 of 32 possible games last two seasons. Not saying he's injury-prone, but it is what it is. Excellent #2 fantasy WR but you'd be foolish to draft him and pencil in 16 starts. Could climb a full four spots if he re-ups with Arizona. Some unknown here.
13. Eddie Royal, Age: 23 y - i - b - ppr - int
A touchdown every 18.2 receptions isn't gonna cut it. But when that's the big chink you can find in a player's rookie season, that's a sign of great things on the horizon. I dare say I'd personally take him ahead of Bowe in a brand new dynasty draft, but this ranking also accounts for Kyle Orton and new offensive system.
TIER FOUR
14. Braylon Edwards, Age: 26 y - i - b - sys - int
Where the hell do you put this guy? From 1,289 yds to 873. From 80 rec. to 55. From 16 touchdowns to three! A gifted athlete with stone hands only mama could love. Kellen Winslow has moved on and, on paper, Braylon IS the Browns offense right now. Will duplicate 2008 on necessity alone. What he does beyond that is up to Brady Quinn. Think safe, but frustrating #2 fantasy receiver.
15. Santonio Holmes, Age: 25 y - i - b - ppr - int
Many were surprised by Santonio merely "holding serve" in his third year after predicting he'd make the quantum leap. Our readers knew both he and Roethlisberger were overhyped. Is yet to catch 1,000 yards and don't hold your breath for 2009. So long as a dominant defense and ground game remain the Steelers entree, Santonio's role is "side dish".
16. Vincent Jackson, Age: 26 y - b - i - sys - int
Might just be the real deal. Entering the fifth year of career, it's technically halftime of his third season, purely in terms of career starts. Ground game beginning to take a more complimentary role behind Rivers and receivers. Seive of a defense helps the cause, as does presence of Gates. Decent #2 with room to grow. His longest reception is yet to be for a touchdown in ANY year of career. Downgrade if you play in a league that awards bonus' by length of touchdown.
17. Anthony Gonzalez, Age: 25 y - i - ppr - sys - int
Now if you're looking for a receiver to take the big leap this year, there's bigger longshots than a guy that managed 57 rec. last year as a slot guy and officially started only two games. Marvin Harrison is gone, so Gonzalez clearly moves into a full time role. Also a clear candidate for 1-on-1 coverage with Wayne and Dallas Clark running around.
18. Antonio Bryant, Age: 28 i - b - ppr - int
Many wasted years and I'm not completely ready to forgive all sins. But seems to have finally found a home. I'm of the belief that addition of Winslow helps the cause. Finished 2008 in a flurry and it wasn't a fluke. Genuine talent here that needs to string together some good decisions.
TIER FIVE
19. Lee Evans, Age: 28 i - b - int
Getting down where a top 5 season would be a truly remarkable feat. Truth be told, I'm probably "pushing it" having Evans this high. Prone to those two or three monster games a year that make his yearly numbers appear better than average and best suited as a #3 fantasy receiver. Still young"ish" and talent early in the learning curve on offense keeps him clinging to top 20.
20. DeSean Jackson, Age: 22 y - b - ppr - sys - int
Over 900 yds on 62 receptions is one heckuva starting point. Already hands down the Eagles best WR on the roster. As if the clock has been turned back eight years on the Panthers Steve Smith when you watch him. Deficient route-running and easily jammed at line of scrimmage but everything he lacks can be taught.
21. Wes Welker, Age: 28 i - ppr - sys - int
Vaults to #14 in point-per-reception. Tiny possession receiver that works incredibly well in traffic - to the point that he and Tom Brady appear to be having same thoughts at times. Could climb a full three or four spots if Brady is running around and slinging it circa 2007 in training camp.
22. Roy Williams, Age: 27 y - i - b - ppr - td - sys
Nothing but regression since rookie season. Absolutely horrible last year. In fact, has started 12 or less games in all but one season of six year career. Truth be told, I had Terrell Owens in this very spot until he was released. If you're having trouble reading between the lines, I'm not enamored with the guy. But Romo's #1 WR target dictates a top 25 ranking until he proves otherwise.
23.. Chad Ocho Cinco, Age: 31 y - b - ppr - td - sys - int
Common inclination would be to write him off but you can't argue with pre-'08 numbers. Since third year in the league, had seasonal LOWS of 87 rec, 1,274 yds and seven touchdowns before last year. This guy was a monster for five season running and Palmer's injury, coupled with a shoulder injury of his own last year bodes well for bounceback. In redraft, he climbs his way up to #13. I think he offers tremendous value in redraft this year. Age not helping cause from dynasty perspective though.
24. Lance Moore, Age: 26 y - b - ppr - td - sys - int
I'd be shocked if he took large step back this year many are predicting. In the league four years now, he's only started 10 games. This could actually be too low. Showed great ability to adjust on the ball last year and common misconception was that the absence of Colston built him. Actually had more targets in the eight games played with Colston in lineup. Tiny WR - (5'9" - 190). Maybe it's Brees but who cares? Brees isn't going anywhere.
25. Sidney Rice, Age: 23 y - i - b - ppr - td
Eight career touchdowns on only 46 receptions. At 6'4" - 202, made to order red-zone target. I believe he takes huge leap this year. Say what you will about Sage Rosenfels. Holds onto the ball too long? Yes. Too quick to tuck-n-run when pocket sags? Yes. Leaves you wondering what he could have been looking at in the secondary at times? Yes. But he also has the ability to make any throw and he's very accurate for streaks. Four touchdowns in each of first two seasons. He'll have that by Halloween this year.
Can't believe I couldn't find a spot for:
Terrell Ownes, Age: 35
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Age: 31
Josh Morgan, Age: 24
Matt Jones, Age: 26
Hines Ward, Age: 33
