LEE EVANS TEAM TAKE

Always dangerous but perennially inconsistent. Will finally get the help he needs with the team’s signing of wide receiver Terrell Owens. Should gain a bit of consistency while playing opposite Owens, but don’t expect his overall numbers to improve much. He’s a No. 2 receiver.

Evans is certainly one guy who can’t be incredibly happy to see Terrell Owens ride into town. While T.O’s presence should open things up for Evans in terms of single coverage, Owens’ possession receiver role will likely receive more of quarterback Trent Edwards' attention as Edwards has never had the sort of arm to take advantage of Evans’ blazing speed. Expect a lull in his numbers until Owens forces his way out of town yet again.

The question to answer here is, will Owens help or hinder Evans’ production in Buffalo? He ranked tenth in the AFC in yards receiving with 1,017. A disturbing trend to note is his touchdown total has decreased every year for five years, with only three last year. Bet on an increase in production from last season as I'm not seeing how Owens' presence is a bad thing for Evans (on the football field).

Only the enigma that is long-ball expert Lee Evans could top 1,000 yds on 63 catches and somehow find a way to only score thrice along with it.  Count me among those that are looking at a glass 1/2 full with the arrival of Owens.  Look...like him or not, the thing about T.O. is that stats follow him.  In his entire career, it's rare to find a season where he failed to make the skill-position components of that system better (from purely a statistical viewpoint).  Funny, I believe this is the year the wheels fall off for Owens himself.  But that doesn't mean his mere presence won't take eyeballs away from Lynch and Evans.  That, we already know, is a fact. Hell, I'm supposed to be writing about Evans right now and look who has my attention.

The biggest loser in the Terrell Owens signing with the Bills appears to be Lee Evans. If Owens can come in, be a model a citizen and take care of the underneath routes while Evans works the deep third, then Evans could see his paltry touchdown numbers increase. But that’s too many ifs with Owens. More than likely, Owens will eat into Evans opportunities, reducing him to borderline number 3 wide receiver.
